Frequently Asked Questions
Relay Attacks
What is a relay attack?
A relay attack is a method of car theft targeting keyless entry vehicles. Criminals use signal amplifiers to capture your key fob's signal from outside your home — through walls, doors and windows — and relay it to an accomplice outside who uses it to unlock and start your car. No keys. No forced entry. No alarm.
How common are relay attacks in Australia?
Relay attacks have increased significantly across Australia in recent years, mirroring trends seen in the UK and Europe where the method became widespread before spreading globally. Any keyless entry vehicle is a potential target regardless of brand or value.
Which cars are vulnerable?
Any vehicle with keyless entry or push-button start is potentially vulnerable. This includes vehicles from Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Volkswagen, and virtually every other manufacturer producing modern vehicles.
Can relay attacks happen in apartments or multi-storey buildings?
Yes. Signal amplifiers are powerful enough to reach through walls, floors and ceilings. Parking in a garage or underground car park does not make you immune.
BLOCKT & Faraday Pouches
How does a Faraday pouch work?
A Faraday pouch is lined with multiple layers of metallic shielding that block all electromagnetic signals including RFID, NFC, and UHF frequencies. When your key is inside a sealed BLOCKT pouch, it emits zero signal — making it completely invisible to relay attack equipment.
Will it work with my car?
Yes. BLOCKT works with all keyless entry vehicles regardless of make or model. If your car has push-button start or unlocks automatically when you approach it, you need a Faraday pouch.
How do I know it's actually working?
Place your key inside the BLOCKT pouch and seal it. Walk to your car and try to unlock it by standing next to it. If the pouch is working correctly, your car will not respond. That's your confirmation.
Does it affect my key fob battery?
No. Blocking the signal does not drain or affect your key fob battery in any way.
What if I have two key fobs?
We recommend protecting both. A relay attack only requires one active key fob signal to succeed. If your spare is sitting in a drawer unprotected, it's still a target.
Will my key still work normally after using BLOCKT?
Yes. Simply remove your key from the pouch when you're ready to use your car. The key fob is completely unaffected by the shielding.
